FAQ
1. What does it cost to use the site?NOTHING! Once registered, you have access to all the site facilities. You will be able to put up to 20 photographs into your portfolio: post one photograph to the gallery every day (up to a maximum of 50 in total); and get involved with activity in the forum. That's all FREE!!
For a small additional annual fee (£20), you can become a ppf eMember and thereby remove the limit on the number of postings to the gallery, increase your portfolio limit to 100 images and have a link to your own site.
2. How do I register?
Press the 'register' button, and complete the form which appears. You will be emailed to tell you that you are registered. You then have full access to the site facilities.
3. What is the 'remember me' option?
The remember me option is there so that you don't have to log in each time you visit ppf. It will remember you for a year after you have logged in with the 'remember me' box ticked.
For security reasons, do not tick the 'remember me' option when using a public or shared computer.
4. Who runs ppf?
ppf is currently run by a steering group of eight. Chris Best ( Chair ), Stephanie Best ( Secretary ), Graham McAlpine ( Treasurer ), Ross Chapman, Davy Taylor, Norman Robson, Alan Brown and Peter Rickerby.
5. Who are the site moderators, and what do they do?
These are members who monitor activity on the site so as to ensure that it satisfies our terms and conditions. Their main task ( which we trust will be rarely, if ever, exercised ) will be to remove images and text which is considered unsuitable. Currently, the moderators are drawn from ppf steering group.
6. Who writes the News Section?
This will be compiled by a member of the steering group. The person currently carrying out this task is Alan Brown
7. Can I submit items for possible inclusion in the News Section?
Yes. Do so by using the info@ button on the home page. ppf cannot guarantee however that material sent will all be posted
8. What is POTW?
Photograph of the Week. Chosen by someone from outside of ppf, the Photograph of the Week is featured on ppf Home Page . . . . for a week.
9. How is the 'Photograph of the Week' chosen?
We invite a guest each week to view all the submissions to the gallery during the previous week, and choose their favourite. The reasons for their choice will be outlined in the News Section. Work submitted by whichever member of the steering group appointed the particular selector is ineligble for selection.
10. What is the difference between the Gallery and Portfolios?
Each member can have up to 20* of their photographs on display in their personal portfolio. The gallery is an area to which all members can post ( no more than one per day ) photographs and as such, work is being added all the time. It is only the work in the gallery which receives comments from other members, and it is only the work in the gallery which is considered when selecting the Photograph of the Week
* which can be increased to 40 for a small annual fee.
11. Why can I only upload one photograph a day to the gallery?
We hope to give all uploaded work a reasonable period on the front few pages ( where it is more likely to be viewed and reviewed ) Without a limit there is a risk that the gallery could be flooded with work from few photographers.
12. What are Albums?
This feature, available only to eMembers, allows you to collect photographs which have already been posted into either your gallery or your portfolio, into group/s which can then be viewed as a separate collection. These photographs are not lost from gallery of portfolio, where they will still be seen by visitors.
13. Who is Uncle Norman?
We are unable to disclose just who he ( or she ) is. This was a condition of Uncle Norman agreeing to join us.
14. How do I prepare my photographs for the Gallery or Portfolio
Resize your photographs so that they are 600 pixels on the longest side. Then save them as jpegs ( aiming for a size of around 100kb ) Photoshop users can use 'Save for the Web' to speed up this process. The only exception to this is your profile photograph ( for those who choose to post one ) This should be 150 pixels wide.
